Asymmetric Bands Oscillator

Upside and downside stretch are allowed to differ. Band touch is not a reversal.

Asymmetric Bands Oscillator

Schematic layout — not a live chart.

What it is

Asymmetric Bands Oscillator is a new-panel port of mladen’s 2019 MQ5: a moving average of price, an asymmetric deviation average, then (price − MA) / range so the oscillator lives around zero with ±1 bands. Bands period default 14, smooth 3, deviation 2; average method SMA / EMA / SMMA / LWMA; price Close / Typical / etc. Fills between the oscillator and the bands make stretch obvious. Optional value-area background (VA lookback 48) and distance-from-POC are volume-profile extras on the same pane — they do not turn this into a liquidity map. Scale pins near −1.2 / +1.2. Use it to judge whether a move is extended relative to recent behavior, not to fade every touch of a band. Educational oscillator only. Not financial advice.

What to look for

  • Oscillator pressing a ±1 band that is already the wide side of the asymmetry
  • A return toward zero after a stretch, with structure (Laguerre / SuperTrend) still intact
  • Band width expanding with the session — the tool is describing regime, not calling a top
  • Fills that persist: a quick poke vs a hold outside the band are different stories
  • Optional VA background: oscillator extreme coinciding with price far from POC is location, not a fade
  • Chop: oscillator whipping through zero with thin bands — no stretch to study

Settings that matter

  • Bands period 14 · Smooth 3 · Bands deviation 2 — what “normal” means on this TF
  • Bands average method (SMA default) and Price source — do not switch mid-read
  • Show fills so the pane stays readable on the dark theme
  • Show Value Area Background / VA Lookback 48 / Distance from POC — optional; off if the pane is crowded
  • Show Alerts (default off) — band events, not entries

Common mistake

Fading every band touch. In trend the oscillator can ride the outer band. Asymmetry tells you stretch; it does not tell you the move is over. Do not confuse the optional VA fill with Liquidity Pro Map.
